Zeker vijf jaar was de liefde tussen de Britse producer/percussionist Andrew Barlow en zijn zangeres Louise Rhodes bekoeld. Hun kindje en band Lamb ging de koelkast in. Beiden gingen verder met zijprojectjes, maar wisten elkaar uiteindelijk weer te vinden. Dat heeft dit jaar tot een nieuw album geleid. ‘5’ genaamd. Het is het wachten waard.

Loom

Dat blijkt op Mundial wel. Ze storten een handjevol nieuwe songs over het publiek heen. In dat bekende lome tempo. Geen hapklare, consumeerbare songs, maar betonblokken die zwanger zijn van de effecten. De bliepjes en beats vliegen je om de oren. Gecombineerd met die donkere, monotone stem van Rhodes.

Lamb is geen act die er in wil knallen. Het is een diesel die bromt. Een machine die tergend langzaam op gang komt. Downtempo. In een stijl die zwerft tussen jungle en triphop. Radiohead meets Portishead. Geen vrolijke kost. Maar een gelaagde sound die meer biedt dan het oor in eerste instantie denkt op te pikken.

Vrolijk

De Britten maken het publiek het niet gemakkelijk. Als je komt om lekker te dansen dan heb je te wachten. Als je vrolijk uit je plaat wilt gaan, dan dien je naar een ander podium te verhuizen. Lamb is geen festivalband. Zet ze in een compact hok en ze pakken je bij de strot, maar op een grote weide moet je geconcentreerd luisteren wil je meegezogen worden in hun vibe.

Maar de doorbijter herkent de schoonheid. Waardeert-ie ook. Muziek hoeft niet altijd tot plezier te leiden. Op de knieën gaan voor melancholie is ook een prettige ervaring. Laat dat nu net het handelsmerk van Lamb zijn.

Stuiteren

Barlow stuitert als een jonge hond over het podium. Rhodes pijnigt je met haar slaapliedjesstem. Prachtig optreden, met halverwege het moment voor het hitpubliek: ‘Gabriel’ ontbreekt uiteraard niet. Fijn dat ze weer terug zijn. In september kun je ze intiemer zijn. In Paradiso waarschijnlijk.

De stuiterbal blijkt populair. Dit speelgoed ter waarde van vijftig cent komt in handen van Gijs, die mij er een net getapt biertje voor teruggeeft.

Een biertje. Dat gaat er bij Patricia altijd wel in. Ik krijg er een halve rol volkoren biscuits van de Super de Boer voor terug. Op zoek naar een hongerige festivalbezoeker.

Ondanks dat Monica allergisch is voor tarwe en zelf dus niet van de koekjes kan genieten, ziet zij wel wat in een ruil. Ze grabbelt in haar trolley en haalt een douchegordijn tevoorschijn. “Als je je kleedje hier op neerlegt, blijft hij droog”, is haar logische redenatie.

André heeft liever een droog kleedje dan een frisse adem en ruilt zijn Smint – grote verpakking – voor het blauw met groen gestreepte douchegordijn.

Met al die mooie mannen die hier rondlopen, is een frisse adem geen overbodige luxe, moet Sarah gedacht hebben. Zij ruilt – met pijn in haar hart – haar zojuist zelf versierde Fairtrade banaan. “Hij heet Max. Zoek een goed thuis voor hem.”

Een goed thuis vindt Max bij de jongens van Biki90. Ze zijn net bezig met hun zelfbelegde bolletjes en lusten daar best een stuk fruit bij. Een vrolijke banaan verdient een vrolijk ruilproduct. Een ballon. Twee ballonnen. Twee ballonnen met een doorsnee van een meter.

De megaballonnen zijn in trek. Bij het winkeltje Bumigaya wil eigenaresse Janette ze maar al te graag hebben. Ze biedt hiervoor een flesje olie in een paars doosje.

De hitte blijft uit op dit festival, dus Sabine kan best zonder haar deodorant.

De koortslip van Frederik is inmiddels voorbij, dus de koortslipzalf – die klaarblijkelijk goed werkt – heeft hij niet meer nodig. Ja, hij heeft liever een vrouwendeodorant.

Rosalie en Caroline zijn allebei koortslipvrij, maar vinden ruilen gewoon tof. Ze nemen de zalf aan in ruil voor een sigaret en een haarspeldje.

Dat haarspeldje interesseert hem niet, maar in een sigaret heeft Maarten wel zin. Het Brand-keycord – dat hij pas sinds gisteren bezit – staat hij er graag voor af.

Aan een keycord kan je sleutels hangen en aan mascara niet. Dat beseft Paula maar al te goed wanneer ze akkoord gaat met deze deal.

De Spaanse Gerardo draagt over het algemeen geen make-up, maar wil dat voor de verandering best eens proberen. In ruil twee ongebruikte oordopjes.

Met de oordopjes vertrek ik richting de Busstop Bakery. Ze bieden een cupcake met karamel, room, vanille en zout. “Dat zout is voor de twist.” Nou ben ik dol op twists. En op cupcakes. Ik besluit het ruilen hier te stoppen. Nooit eerder at ik zo’n lekkere cupcake. “Van ruilen komt huilen?” Nee, mijn juf uit groep drie zat er helemaal naast.

‘Binnen Spinifex zijn we allemaal oorspronkelijk Jazzmuzikanten. En binnen de Jazz volgt iedereen Amerika. Maar voor mij voelt het veel natuurlijker om naar muziek uit alle windstreken te luisteren. Ik ben opgegroeid in Amsterdam en in Nederland zijn we natuurlijk gewend om veel naar het buitenland te kijken. Misschien heeft het daarmee te maken.’

Op het Here Be Dragons-podium op Mundial is die wereldse inspiratie zondagmiddag niet alleen te horen, maar ook te zien: op het podium bij Spinifex staan twee Indiase muzikanten. ‘Begin dit jaar tourden we in zuid-India. Muziek is daar helemaal geïntegreerd in het dagelijks leven. Ze koppelen complexe ritmes aan hun gevoel en improviseren veel. Daar laten wij ons dan weer door inspireren.’ Maar bij India houdt het niet op: In november trekt Spinifex naar Turkije om te touren. En als het aan Levelt ligt, staat er binnenkort ook een muzikale samenwerking met Marokkaanse muzikanten op het programma. ‘Daar is onze saxofonist pas geweest en zijn verhalen klonken fantastisch.’ Maar of dat gaat lukken is nog niet zeker. De komende twee jaar heeft de band het hartstikke druk en het is niet zeker of ze hun subsidie daarna behouden. ‘Met de bezuinigingen he? Daar kan ik me echt kwaad om maken. Triest is het.’ Maar lang blijft Levelt niet bij het onderwerp hangen, liever praat hij over zijn reizen. ‘Ik ben reisgek, altijd al geweest. Vind het inspirerend en gezond. En dat ik dat kan combineren met muziek is toch fantastisch?

First you need some cream, sugar and a flavoring ingredient. You mix the ingredients and put them in a plastic bag. Then you put the bag in a box with some salt and crushed ice and start to shake it. After a while you have ice cream. Amazingly easy, isn’t it?

Today at Mundial the ice cream was flavored with red currants found nearby. ‘It essentially works the same way as a real ice cream machine. You just don’t need any electricity, all the energy comes from your own body’, explains designer Anneke Jacobs. ‘I think we have too many machines so I wanted to invent a “living machine”. I took an ice cream machine to parts to see how it works and developed this.’

Jacobs tours festivals with her mobile ice cream maker all summer long. It’s great fun for kids and adults. ‘The weather has been unfortunate this weekend, but people still found us. 500 ice creams were made yesterday and today we are probably going to make 500 as well.’

Last September eight students from the Fontys Academy for Creative Industries took part in a course about international event, music and entertainment studies. They were given the opportunity to set up a business and they came out with the idea of Bus Stop Bakery.

‘We had contact with master chef Rudolf van Veen who is also a guest teacher at our school’, explains Nino Schöningh. ‘Cupcakes were a huge trend in the United States, so we wanted to try if we could bring them here as well. We wanted to combine them with another trend: food trucks. In food trucks the chef makes food right where the people are, so they don’t need to go to a restaurant to enjoy it.’

The Bus Stop Bakery collaborates with the Rockacademie in Tilburg. Musicians from the academy tour with the bus and perform for the customers. Here at Mundial they have three magicians entertaining the cupcake eaters as well. Schöningh: ‘We want to offer people the whole experience, not just cupcakes. That’s the reason we have the performers with us.’

Doing good
Although cupcakes may be one of the greatest things on the earth, there are more important things. Besides sellig sweets, the students want to do good.

‘This is a non-profit business’, says Schöningh. ‘We share the money between three different charity organizations: Villa Pardoes, Bart de Graaff foundation and Pink Ribbon (breast cancer fund). That’s really important for us. We enjoy doing this, so we want to give other people the opportunity to enjoy as well.’

There are some great principles when it comes to baking the products. Schöningh: ‘We use some fair trade ingredients, for example the chocolate is fair. We try to use seasonal ingredients as well, so the selection of cupcakes varies.’

The Bus Stop Bakery started its first tour on March 21^st this year. The purpose was simply to let people know they exist. Now they are touring the festivals around the Netherlands. And they’re even going abroad. ‘We are going to Madrid next month. We were the best student company of the Netherlands this year, so now we are going to Spain to compete against businesses from seventeen other countries.’

So business is good. People have been really enthusiastic about the bus. Yesterday, they sold about 500 cupcakes and today they are likely to sell just as much. ‘I think the chocolate ones are most popular among girls. Caramel and strawberry cupcakes sell really well too’, tells Nino Schöning.

And what is your favorite? Schöningh: ‘The King. It’s inspired by the favorite food of Elvis, fried peanut butter and banana sandwich.’

Hanna Puolakka (20) from Finland finds Mundial a little more than just a music festival. ‘I was here in Tilburg during the Carnaval time and this reminds me of that period. This whole festival gives me an association of a circus, but in a good way’, Puolakka says.

The festival differs from the festivals she has been to in Finland, for example the amount of children and older people has surprised Puolakka. ‘I would say that this is the most colorful festival I have ever been to. I enjoy being here even though the only artist I really want to see is Moby.’

Irene Vidal Cal (22) from Spain agrees with Puolakka. ‘People are not only younger or older than at a normal festival in Spain but also from more different backgrounds. Well, it is called a world music festival’, Vidal Cal notes. ‘There is one unexpected difference between Mundial and festivals in Spain. Even though you can see lots of people from different cultures here, they all seem to dress up in similar clothing.’

The most astonishing observation for her has been the level of the performances. ‘I didn’t have any expectations towards Mundial but it is really worth visiting. I like that wherever you go inside the festival area, there is some show going on.’

Oscar Torrans (21) from Ireland has the same opinion about the level of performances. He normally goes to these kinds of mixed music festivals in Ireland so he knew what to expect when he bought the ticket. ‘The quality of artists at world music festivals in Ireland is not as good as it is here. That is weird, especially when you think about the fact that the tickets for Mundial are a lot cheaper than the tickets for festivals in Ireland. I really liked the African bands here. Especially Bombino was funky as f*ck!,’ Torrans tells eagerly.

Another thing that is striking, is the fact that the festival area is tinier than the ones Torrans visited in Ireland. ‘I think that’s a good thing, because here we don’t suffer from a problem which is usual for festivals in Ireland. The festival area is so much cleaner than at the festivals I’m used to visit.’

The only problem foreign people mentioned was the constantly changing weather. Well, we are in the Netherlands, so what do you expect?
